RESOURCE PARTAY

posted by Alexandra

What’s up my advert brethren? Let’s get down and dirty with Alexandra’s crazy mad resource hook-up. I’m about to blow your mind with the amount of free swag I’m about to unload on your respective computer-boxes.
IT’S PARTY TIME!

TYPE

Alright, first off, here are some not-so-well-known open-source type collections. For when you want free fonts, but you don’t want Bleeding Cowboys.

THE LEAGUE OF MOVABLE TYPE

Seriously, with a name like that, who could say no? The League of Movable Type makes you feel like you’re apart of some undercover hipster conspiracy, but like, with kerning and stuff. Keep an eye on these bros, they’re great!

THE LOST TYPE CO-OP

The Lost Type Co-Op is another really cool open-source font database for fonts that are actually really really well-done, and won’t make your project look like it was designed by a 13-year-old with social anxiety.

BRUSHES

So I basically live for Photoshop brushes. It’s a sad life, I know, but nothing gets me more amped than finding a massive resource of really nice high-res brushes. Don’t know how to install brushes to PS? It’s easy. Just make a folder for yourself somewhere on your computer (where you will remember it) and name it “brushes” or something, then just double-click on the .abr file and it will automatically install itself to your PS. Magic!

BRUSHESDOWNLOAD.COM

I know, I know, not the most creative of names, right? Well, despite it’s very shady and less-than-legit appearance, brushesdownload.com is one of the biggest single resources of brushes, patterns and other miscellaneous Photoshop goodies I’ve found thus far. GO NUTS.

PS: If the link is down, don’t worry, I think they’re messing with the site right now.

TEXTURES

Textures are the unsung heroes of good design work. A subtle, properly used texture can make your ho-hum design into HOT DAYUM! Seriously you guys, no lie.

CGTEXTURES.COM

I have been a loyal user of this cgtextures.com for years. They have tons of really nice, high-quality stock textures that you can access for free (you have to make an account but it’s totally worth it!). There are daily limits but as long as you aren’t trying to download A BILLION things at one time it’s no big deal. Also, if you pay a little more, you can get access to REALLY HUGE files and get tiling patterns as well.

And of course, where would we be without our arbitrary cat gif of the week!? No where, that’s where.

no man i feel fii—… whoa man i am FREAKIN OUT

Tim Burtons Official Website

posted by scott

Although this site is in grave need of some updating- any true Tim Burton fan will appreciate the chance to “become” one of his characters while getting to walk through a virtual gallery of Burton’s own paintings. The gallery includes early character sketches from movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas as well as original painting from the director. The information on the site seems to be a bit outdated and the design, especially on the landing page, could use some work… but the concept behind the site is entertaining and has legs. To me this site is a 5 right now but could be a 10 if it was expanded upon.

Movie minisite.

posted by scott

I have the bad habit of anticipating upcoming movies and then somehow always missing them when they finally make it into the theater… this is one such movie. Over the weekend I was trying to find out when it would be released on DVD (to no avail) and stumbled across the minisite for the movie. Don’t let the completely sub-par flash into page dissuade you from going to the actual site which has, in my opinion, some really good interactivity. From a seamless trailer that plays in the background (and expands without stopping to fit your browser window) to the cross hairs that appear and give you more information about the movie this minisite does a good job of branding the movie Hanna.

The Ol’ City – Can You Find Yours?

posted by cparks

Cities today change so rapidly that your town probably looks different every time you go home for break. Well, here are some pictures of cities as they were before the 1950′s. See if you can find yours (I found Baltimore, Maryland before it became Bodymore, Murdaland).

Arty Bollocks Generator

posted by cparks

I know that a lot of us are nearing the end of our adventures at SCAD. With that comes the impending doom of finding a job and with that comes the painful creation of resumes, cover letters and, in some cases, artists statements. Most art kids say they don’t like the write and now with the Arty Bollocks generator they don’t have to. The ABG is a website that creates colorful artists statements that will surely say a lot about your artistic self and land you a high-paying job right out of school. Check it out here.

A Thin Line

posted by kgraves

A thin line

This website is by MTV and they are trying to reach out to the younger audience to get them to understand some of their actions. It is a good website because you can read others stories and post yours own so hopefully some of the stories will hit some and change. You can go to the map and pick the state your from then it will show you area codes of where people have “drawn a line”. If you click on one it shows peoples stories such as, “I just called someone out for abusing a friend.” It is interesting to see what is going on around your community.

Mercedes AMG

posted by kgraves

I thought this was a cool website because it is specifically for the AMG motors of Mercedes. Mercedes is known for the power it gives off with the AMG motor so having a website dedicated to it is wise. For the lovers of Mercedes this is a great website. It gives you a better understanding of the engine and everything that goes along with it.
