Infographics as art

posted by scott

LPK, a premier branding agency located in my hometown of Cincinnati (check them out they have some great clients with P&G right around the corner) took it upon themselves to create an educational art installation in their windows… check out the pictures and article here.

Repurposing google earth/maps

posted by scott

Although not sponsored or affiliated with Google GoogleSightseeing repurposes images from Google earth and Goodle maps into themed “vacations” of a sort. Visit Egypt and see the pyramids from the sky. Like volcanoes? See a list of articles with Google Earth photos of volcanoes all over the world and even some outside of this world thanks to Google Mars. The articles incorporate information with sky views and street views where available and as an added touch a passport like stamp at the beginning of each article. As the tag line says… Why bother seeing the world for real?

Designing for Dyslexia

posted by cparks

It’s nice to a typeface that truly exhibits the capacity for great function while also preserving a beautiful form that’s literally easy on the eyes. Designer Christian Boer, a diagnosed dyslexic, set out on a quest to create a typeface that could be easily read by other people with dyslexic. In doing so he created Dyslexie, an extraordinary set of type that was designed according to the way dyslexics read words and see letters. Honestly, the video does the best job of explaining it, so give it a look. I will say that video is fairly painful because there isn’t background music, but hey, turn on your Pandora first. Problem solved. Now shut it and look. Read the full article here.

Itunes Goes Social

posted by audell

In the age of social media of course Itunes would eventually get on the band wagon. Ping is a way for people to share their favorite music, follow their favorite artists, and follow people who they think suggest good music. The only problem for those who use Itunes and have not signed up for ping, you will be by apple until you do. Every time you log in like a band you will be prompted to sign up. Other then that the application is pretty cool. Following your favorite artists you will be able to see their updates on their tours, albums, and just their day to day lives. Its and interesting form of social media but honestly ping doesn’t set itself apart from other media.

Alternative Social Media

posted by htiffany

One up and coming alternative social media site, is one I hope most everyone is already familiar with, because it’s awesome. Tumblr is one of the quickest simplest and most refined blogging resources which seamlessly integrates and encourage social media aspects. I’m on Tumblr daily. I post on my own tumblr most days.

This is what my personal tumblr page looks like. A lot of people only get this far. They see a blog, and don’t investigate further, they assume tumblr is just another way of posting and maintaining a personal blog page.

Most people don’t really understand tumblr. Most of its functionality is hidden until you are actually a user yourself. Through these screen shots of my personal Tumblr feed, hopefully I can bring some awareness to the more social aspects of tumblr. In my feed is every post from everyone I follow. All of my friends, favorite brands, art directors. Even high fashion brands have tumblrs, letting other people in the tumblr community early keep up with the latest trends with a follow.

Mmm, free buttons. Always good to keep in your magic back of photoshop tricks. I mean, you should totally make your own buttons, but in a tight spot, these are great!

Spotify

posted by Alexandra

Pandora, it’s not you… it’s me. I mean – wait, no, you suck. It’s totally you.

Spotify is the latest in music social networks, and it kicks Pandora’s ass so hard. Instead of dealing with stupid ads all the time and only getting to listen to “some” music and never getting to listen to that ONE song you just REALLY want to hear right now, Spotify lets you listen to any song ever, any time, as many times as you want. You can make specific playlists (instead of the garbage playlists Pandora makes for you) or you can generate one and edit it manually. This is everything Pandora wished it could be.

Right now you can request an invite and be put “in line” to wait to be let in, or you can just send the invites to a few of your facebook friends and get let in immediately (some of you might have gotten a notification from me on facebook about this – thanks for helping me get in faster! :D )

Granted, not all things are awesome forever. In the future I can see some liscensing issues getting in Spotify’s way, much like it did with Pandora, but hopefully it will stay its pristine, awesome self for as long as possible.
